Planning

5-6
The student produces a plan that contains a number
of detailed, logical steps that describe the use of
resources and time. The student critically evaluates
the plan and justifies any modifications to the design.

Time Line:
April 27th- bibliography due (including sources for music)
April 30th- Planning Complete
May ??- Piece is due

Investigate

5-6
The student explains the problem, discussing its
relevance. The student critically investigates the
problem, evaluating information from a broad range
of appropriate, acknowledged sources. The
student describes detailed methods for appropriate
testing to evaluate the product/solution against the
design specification.

Evaluation

As part of my Evaluation Process, I had three people watch and comment on my documentary,
These were my Questions:

1. What did you learn from the documentary?
2. Was the voice over effective? If not, how could I make it effective?
3. What were some of the good points?
4. What were some of the bad points?
5. On the whole, how could i have made my documentary better?

Rose:
1. Different teaching styles
2. Yes, it explained the teaching styles well
3. the voice over, and the easy to understand explanations
4. The same video the whole time and star wars at the end
5. You could have used different videos rather than just using the same one the whole time. It should have had an ending rather than just stopping

Matin:
1. That there a lot of teaching styles
2. The voice over was really good and clear
3. I liked the initial movie and that everything goes in order and makes sense
4. It would be nice with some more original clips some like you have taken your self
5. Another topic would be nice, because teaching style are just boring

Sonia:
1. I learned ... let me get to you on that..
2. The voice over was clear but i think you could have added some music here and there to make it more interesting.
3. The video of the same person acting as different types of teachers... that was funny.
4. The star wars vid at the end of the video... it was kind of confusing.. why was that there??
5. Adding more music... adding more funny stuff so that the viewer is intrigued and isn't that bored... cuz no offense it was boring :/ sorry to say

-----------
I believe that the documentary was not as successful as it could be. According to the responses, the documentary effectively informed people about different teaching styles. It was not entertaining at all, sadly i failed to provide an effective comedy relief segment. The documentary would require an entire remake, to make it an effective documentary.

Improvement:

On a whole, i could improve ont he investigation by keeping a btter track of my sources. For the design, i think i could have planned the documentary with much more detail, and gotten feedback. For plan i could have prepared better and been much more realistic. For the create, i should not have done it in the last minute

Documentary Finished

Documentary Create

Create:
Daily Creation Logs (some days)

Create General:
First I had the idea of creating a documentary on the basis of the different teaching styles that were present of stonehill. Then I wanted to compare those different teaching styles to the 4 basic teaching category’s. I first created my mind map, to display my different conventions and documentary style. Over time I did my research, and when I was ready I started to create my documentary. I went to a number of classrooms and got some primary footage(and evidence) of the different teaching styles. Then when I was finally working out all the bugs from my filing styles, I was told we were not allowed to film on campus anymore. This of course led to me having to change my documentary entirely. Which meant i had to do more research and redo my entire design. From then on I simply used archival footage and voice over to create my documentary. My documentry is now lacking originol content, but is much more proffesional and informative. For future classes i would recommend allowing them to be able to film on campus. I followed my plan (perhaps not to the letter) but the plan allowed em to keep the big picture in mind.

To physically make my documentary, i used Windows Movie Maker, this program is both helpful and simple. It allow me to use a simple series of video clips to turn them into a documentary. To put in the audio i recorded and edited my sound bites with audacity, and then i simply put the audio files into W MM and aligned it with the video. Had we had the opportunity to film on campus, and perhaps a better movie making software, the documentary could become much more professional and flowing.

Documentary Plan

Plan:

Task:                Bibliography Due                                                          Date due:    23 Jan 2012

Process:

I did quite a bit of research, and I found out a lot about teaching styles, and how they affect students. I also discovered there are 4 main teaching styles. I used many different sources, including websites, journals and Documentary's. The sources were not difficult to find.

Step Three

Task:                Design Complete                                  Date due:    Jan 27 2012

Process:

I finished my design, and am satisfied with the length of the documentary. The plan did not take long and it looks relatively solid and simple.

Step Four

Task:                Planning Complete                                Date due: January 31 2012

Process:

Ive Had to change my planning and design, also I’ve had to delete all my footage. But the new documentary looks promising. The new design had to be changed because i could not produce my basic raw footage nor ask students of their opinions, in school.

Step Five

Task:                Filming Complete                                              Date due:   March 3 2012

Process: Instead of doing actual filming ive decided to sue only documentary footage. This of course means that it will lack originality, but will be much more professional.

Step Six

Task:    Evaluations due                                                Date due:    March 23 2012

Process: My evaluation is going well, and will be done by the final work due date of March 30th

Step Seven

Task:    ALL WORK DUE                                   Date due:    March 30 2012

Process:    [To Be Filled In]

Documentary Design

Design:

Possible Documentary's:
-Star Trek  [Too broad, and would be hard to do]

-Teaching styles [Would be easy to do in a school, lots of open resources]
-Stonehill and its social groups [would be too narrow, no idea what the point would be]
-Life in Bangalore, as a Teen [Could do, would require alot of interviews, connections, but might prove useful and insightful]
  Filming Styles: (possible documentary styles)
-Interviews of students and teachers [would be the best mix of street view person and professional opinion]
-using only professional interviews [might be a bit boring but it would provide the documentary with a serious/ official side]
- Jiggly Camera, walking around school and interviewing students [would be useful, and could provide a down to earth/student point of view]
-Using Only Archival Footage [Only if there is no way to get primary footage]

In the End i chose the Teaching Styles Documentary, because it would be easy to do in a school, and i would have more than enough resources. Also the documentary could prove useful tot he school administration. I also chose to do the Teacher and Student interview, because it would provide a wide range of opinions and information.

For my design i went through many possible ideas before coming up with the final design. This design balanced the information side of the documentary with the Comedy side

- I should trust this source because it is an official student journal, and an official source.

Johnston, G. (1987). Four Teaching Styles [Television series episode]. In The Undergraduate Lecteur. Bangalore: Youtube.
-This was an awesome source, which was the primary footage I used for my entire documentary. With this I was able to demonstrate and support my arguments.

-I should trust this source because it is form an official website and it agrees with all my other sources of information

Another Brick In The Wall, By Pink Floyd. 1979. Roger Waters

-I used this song to give the documentary background sound; also the song related to the subject, teachers and their teaching styles.

Bad Teacher: Trailer., youtube.com, Bangalore, India. 2012
-I used this video to provide a comic relief

Documentary Investigation

Investigation
Information Summary:

We were tasked with creating a documentary that directly related to an issue or topic in stonehill.

I decided to do a documentary on teachers and their teaching styles, this way we could see what were the different types of teaching styles, and there effectiveness in Stonehill.
For my research is went through many sources, including many scientific journals and websites. I also used a number of documentary to provide evidence for my documentary. Through my research, I found out that some teaching styles are more effective than others. Students seem to prefer teachers who are laid back and tlak to them in a informal manner. They prefer teachers who they can relate to, and teachers that are funny. This gives students a much more relaxed and care free atmosphere. Another teaching style students prefer are teachers who they can interact with, many are science teachers who give students a hands on experience. Another teaching style students don’t mind that much is a ‘general’ teacher, who mixes interaction, formality and informality just right. They give off the feeling that their your friend, but still higher up on the ladder than you are. The teaching style most students hate, is the strict teacher. This teacher prefers the whip over the carrot. They demand order and rely on heavy bookwork; they are usually Math or English teachers. Also the level to which a student is responsive to a single teacher is dependent on their learning style.

Documentry Design

Rey's Regime
 Opening:
 - (45-50)Open with "another brick in the wall" music vid
-(10-20)Start with interview asking a teacher, "what do you think is the best teaching method?" (the one who answers a iron fist)
-(20-30 seconds of footage with music) Open with footage of different teachers screaming  (preferabbly with some classic rock in the background)
-(10-20)then a inteview with a teacher who answers a weaker sense
-(10-20)show a clip of students misbehaving in class (or sleeping)
-Slam open title [Reys regime]

Body:
- (1 min ) use archival footage and bobbing head (me) to discuss the different styles, and which teacher types usually fit them
- 1 (20-30 ) return to the first interview and ask them to explain why they believe that the technique is effective.
- 2 ( 20-30) spend sometime talking about whether or not he teacher is correct (turn it around)
- 3 (20 ) funny : some examples of his/her teaching style
- Rinse and repeat for the other teachers
- (10-20)Funny interlude ( maybe a point about how the teachers were once kids too , hippys and such)
- (20-30)Talk about how they directly affect students
- (10-20)Ask the first student what they think of [insert teachers name]'s teaching style?
- (30-45) Show all the responses, without the question
-  Rinse and repeat for each teacher

Closing:
-Funny interlude :(maybe something about connecting the students responses to their attitudes in class)
 - Summary of what we found out, but leave it open ended

Evaluation [Game]

For my evaluation report, i created a series of questions

-What are somethings you like?

-What are somethings you don't like?

-Did you learn anything useful?

-Is the layout, user friendly?

-List some things that can be improved

Then i went through a process of having my classmates play my game, then answer the questions.
They gave me plenty of useful and meaningful feedback. If we had been given more time i could improve my game significantly.

Here are some of the responses:

Alexander
I like the controls the game play was easy to understand I didnt like how easy it was it wasn’t a challenge. I learned nothing. The layout was clever and worked. add challenging characters or tasks!

Anonymous
-What are something’s you like?
It was clear and concise.

-What are something’s you don't like?
the controls were not great. (issue with the program?)

-Did you learn anything useful?
Interesting approach to teaching business ideas. Good within the parameters of the game itself but fundamentally...

-Is the layout, user friendly?
The layout was very user friendly

-List some things that can be improved
Perhaps and opening question so I understand why i'm collecting the apples?

Caroline
-What are something’s you like?
I like the idea of the game

-What are something’s you don't like?
Its short and too easy to play

-Did you learn anything useful?
I learn how to collect apples

-Is the layout, user friendly?
Yes it is

-List some things that can be improved
The game could be a bit more complicated

Jacky
-What are something’s you like?
I like the idea of learning something about business.

-What are something’s you don't like?
At the beginning the game doesn't look like it had any use.

-Did you learn anything useful?
I guess i would have learned something useful if the game had more levels.

-Is the layout, user friendly?
It could have been nicer in terms of how it looks to make the game more interesting.

-List some things that can be improved
More levels, interface.

Anonymous
-What are something’s you like?
the instruction are clear

-What are something’s you don't like?
that you cant go backwards

-Did you learn anything useful?
i learnd about bussnises

-Is the layout, user friendly?
yep its easy

MAKE IT LONGER

If you read over the responses, you will notice that many of them advocate that i make the game longer. I would do that, if i had more time. Some other suggestions said that i should add more levels and complexity to the game. I seriously doubt the fact that this unit was tested before we were assigned it. The unit asks us to create a working game, that teaches the player about a topic of our choice. firstly, teaching anything using Kodu is entirely impossible.Kodu's programming format makes it very difficult and time consuming to create a interactive environment. Also due to the time constraints, i was not given the required amount of time to create a interactive environment that demonstrated my full potential.

In my personal opinion, i believe the game accomplished its goals of teaching business principal. Though it did not do it with extreme depth or complexion, it brought across the message that supply is one of the most important aspects of running a business. Many of the evaluations said they learned some concepts of business, this means that the target audience was affected.

When it comes to my performance throughout the project, i believe i could have done better. I did not do the appropriate tasks on time, and i did not complete all the tasks assigned to me. But the products i did complete, i believe i did as well as anyone could with the the amount of time given, and the tools provided.
I also beleive that i could have created a much more detailed and properly timed plan.

Also my project affected its audience by informing them with basic business principals.

Criterion B and C

CRITERION B DESIGN

DESIGN THE PRODUCT / SOLUTION: Include at least 3 possible designs
• Provide multiple designs/design variations – attach additional pages if necessary

Using GameCreator to create a board game-style maze

Using Kodu to make an Adventure free World Style Game

Using Kodu to make a quest style game to find and learn business ideas

Evaluate designs against specifications

Specs:  To create a game, that teaches an idea or Concept

-GameCreater Maze- The board game would only let you through if you had gotten through a maze that conveyed a business idea. This seems difficult considering the layout and game styles of a maze.

-Kodu Free Adventure Style- The game would allow you to involve yourself with characters indirectly and directly but the order would be random and wouldn’t allow for a controlled and focused goal. This idea would be able to teach the topic but would do so with little success.

-Kodu Quest Style-  This version of game layout would allow you to interact with characters and the environment, but only in a way the game would encourage. I think this layout would be most useful due to its ability to focus your efforts.

Choose best design & justify choice

- I chose to use the business idea, quest style game. This would allow for more effective learning process when it comes to business, due to the ability to make mistakes and learn from them. Also the quest style is a much more effective when using kodu, due to its control style. Also the programming interface lets programmers create a “no-limits” world.

PLAN THE PRODUCT / SOLUTION:

Create a timeline showing what you will do. Include people, hardware, and software.

Step One: Thinking of a series of levels that will teach different business techniques

Task: Thinking of a series of levels that will teach different business techniques

Date due: 2/11/11

Process:  For this I simply sat down and thought of some simple business ideas. I came up with Supply, Sale, and Market Research. As Far as I have devised the first level will be on supply (most likely gathering materials), the second will be on Market Research (most likely going around the different stores and figuring out at what prices one can sell items and still turn a profit). The Third and final level will be on Sale.

Step Two

Task: To Draw up a sort of “story board” for the first level               Date due:        16/11/11

Process: I am thinking it would Be about a kodu who needs help gathering apples. You have to gather the apples and then bring them back to him.

Step Three:

Task: Program the First Level                                                      Date due:  30/11/11

Process:  Here I have programmed the first level, which has turned out to be as I planned. I am having some troubles making the commands occur in correct sequence.

Step Four

Task:    Trouble shoot Level One, and Design Questions                           Date due:   7/12/11

Process: Here I am playing the game and fixing any bugs or problems that show up. There are a number of interfacing questions that are a result of the opening and ending texts. I also have designed my questions. They follow the ‘general’ outline we were given, meaning that they are very broad and allow for a large amount of improvement.

Criterion D Create

USE APPROPRIATE TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES: Discuss the tools available and used. What did you do to develop your skills with these tools?

I used kodu to create my game; I chose kodu because my only other option GameCreater is formatted for arcade style games that follow mazes and levels. Kodu on the other hand lets you go a bit freehand. With kodu I can make the worlds customized to the games needs.

FOLLOW THE PLAN:
Evaluate & reflect on your plan. Describe modifications have you made as you proceeded.

I have to say that my plan went through many stages before it came to what you see today. when i first devised my schedule i did not account for the real time constraints, and the time consuming processes that go into creating a working and interesting game. Also i had to add detail to the plan, to demonstrate what my exact goal was, my original plan did not even include a step for trouble shooting and evalutation. If i had not included those, the game would most likely be filled with bugs and faults. Luckily i had the resources of exemplars and precious planning schedules, this gave me a general idea of what my plan should include.
