**HOLMES** Final Setup GRADE THIS

Investigation
Information Summary:

We were tasked with creating a documentary that directly related to an issue or topic in stonehill.

I decided to do a documentary on teachers and their teaching styles, this way we could see what were the different types of teaching styles, and there effectiveness in Stonehill.
For my research is went through many sources, including many scientific journals and websites. I also used a number of documentary to provide evidence for my documentary. Through my research, I found out that some teaching styles are more effective than others. Students seem to prefer teachers who are laid back and tlak to them in a informal manner. They prefer teachers who they can relate to, and teachers that are funny. This gives students a much more relaxed and care free atmosphere. Another teaching style students prefer are teachers who they can interact with, many are science teachers who give students a hands on experience. Another teaching style students don’t mind that much is a ‘general’ teacher, who mixes interaction, formality and informality just right. They give off the feeling that their your friend, but still higher up on the ladder than you are. The teaching style most students hate, is the strict teacher. This teacher prefers the whip over the carrot. They demand order and rely on heavy bookwork; they are usually Math or English teachers. Also the level to which a student is responsive to a single teacher is dependent on their learning style.

Bibliography:

For Research on Learning Styles- University of Michigan. (2011, January 1). Teaching Strategies: Teaching Styles. CRLT : Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Retrieved February 2, 2012, from http://www.crlt.umich.edu/tstrategies/tsts.php

- This paper helped give me insight on the scientific side of teaching styles. It was a good source because it is from the University of Michigan, which is an official institution.

Iruio, S. (2008). Teaching Techniques. Oneonta Student Journal, 1, 16. Retrieved February 4, 2012, from the Oneonta database.

-This journal, talks about teaching techniques from the point of view of a school student. It gave me a new perspective and some great information.
- I should trust this source because it is an official student journal, and an official source.

Johnston, G. (1987). Four Teaching Styles [Television series episode]. In The Undergraduate Lecteur. Bangalore: Youtube.
-This was an awesome source, which was the primary footage I used for my entire documentary. With this I was able to demonstrate and support my arguments.

-I should trust this source because it is form an official website and it agrees with all my other sources of information

Another Brick In The Wall, By Pink Floyd. 1979. Roger Waters

-I used this song to give the documentary background sound; also the song related to the subject, teachers and their teaching styles.

Bad Teacher: Trailer., youtube.com, Bangalore, India. 2012
-I used this video to provide a comic relief

Design:

Possible Documentary's:
-Star Trek  [Too broad, and would be hard to do]
-Teaching styles [Would be easy to do in a school, lots of open resources]
-Stonehill and its social groups [would be too narrow, no idea what the point would be]
-Life in Bangalore, as a Teen [Could do, would require alot of interviews, connections, but might prove useful and insightful]

 Teaching Styles: (possible documentary styles)
-Interviews of students and teachers [would be the best mix of street view person and professional opinion]
-using only professional interviews [might be a bit boring but it would provide the documentary with a serious/ official side]
- Jiggly Camera, walking around school and interviewing students [would be useful, and could provide a down to earth/student point of view]
-Using Only Archival Footage [Only if there is no way to get primary footage]

In the End i chose the Teaching Styles Documentary, because it would be easy to do in a school, and i would have more than enough resources. Also the documentary could prove useful tot he school administration. I also chose to do the Teacher and Student interview, because it would provide a wide range of opinions and information.

For my design i went through many possible ideas before coming up with the final design. This design balanced the information side of the documentary with the Comedy side
.
Initial Design:

For my final design, i used one of my source documentary's as a primary footage piece. This allowed me to side step filming completely.

Mind Map:

Plan:

Task:                Bibliography Due                                                          Date due:    23 Jan 2012

Process:

I did quite a bit of research, and I found out a lot about teaching styles, and how they affect students. I also discovered there are 4 main teaching styles. I used many different sources, including websites, journals and Documentary's. The sources were not difficult to find.

Step Three

Task:                Design Complete                                  Date due:    Jan 27 2012

Process:

I finished my design, and am satisfied with the length of the documentary. The plan did not take long and it looks relatively solid and simple.

Step Four

Task:                Planning Complete                                Date due: January 31 2012

Process:

Ive Had to change my planning and design, also I’ve had to delete all my footage. But the new documentary looks promising. The new design had to be changed because i could not produce my basic raw footage nor ask students of their opinions, in school.

Step Five

Task:                Filming Complete                                              Date due:   March 3 2012

Process: Instead of doing actual filming ive decided to sue only documentary footage. This of course means that it will lack originality, but will be much more professional.

Step Six

Task:    Evaluations due                                                Date due:    March 23 2012

Process: My evaluation is going well, and will be done by the final work due date of March 30th

Step Seven

Task:    ALL WORK DUE                                   Date due:    March 30 2012

Process:    [To Be Filled In]

Create:
Daily Creation Logs (some days)

Create General:
First I had the idea of creating a documentary on the basis of the different teaching styles that were present of stonehill. Then I wanted to compare those different teaching styles to the 4 basic teaching category’s. I first created my mind map, to display my different conventions and documentary style. Over time I did my research, and when I was ready I started to create my documentary. I went to a number of classrooms and got some primary footage(and evidence) of the different teaching styles. Then when I was finally working out all the bugs from my filing styles, I was told we were not allowed to film on campus anymore. This of course led to me having to change my documentary entirely. Which meant i had to do more research and redo my entire design. From then on I simply used archival footage and voice over to create my documentary. My documentry is now lacking originol content, but is much more proffesional and informative. For future classes i would recommend allowing them to be able to film on campus. I followed my plan (perhaps not to the letter) but the plan allowed em to keep the big picture in mind.

To physically make my documentary, i used Windows Movie Maker, this program is both helpful and simple. It allow me to use a simple series of video clips to turn them into a documentary. TO put in the audio i recorded and edited my sound bites with audacity, and then i simply put the audio files into W MM and aligned it with the video. Had we had the opportunity to film on campus, and perhaps a better movie making software, the documentary could become much more professional and flowing.
